CERLIS is a social science research unit founded in the 1960s and placed under the supervisory authority of the Université Paris Cité, the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, and the CNRS. Romain Pudal has headed the Centre since 1 January 2024.
CERLIS brings together researchers in sociology, education science, information and communication science, language science, history, and political science, all of whom are committed to meeting the demanding academic criteria of scientific excellence in their discipline.
The CERLIS academic team consists of 40 tenured researchers, close to 100 associate researchers, and around 60 PhD students. Every year it additionally hosts several guest researchers.
CERLIS members are involved in a wide range of international activities, including fieldwork on every continent, co-supervision of PhDs, international research projects, the organization of scientific events, the publication of international collaborative work, participation in international research networks (MAGE, AISLF, ESA, ISA, ICA, ISCHE) and the translation of numerous publications into a wide range of languages.
CERLIS activities cover four main areas of research:
- CULTURE, MEDIA, SOCIAL INTERACTION
- EDUCATION, SOCIALIZATION, STAGES OF LIFE
- FAMILY, INDIVIDUALIZATION, INSTITUTIONS
- WORK, CLASS, LIFESTYLE
In addition to these four pillars, two broad cross-cutting themes characterize the unit’s research:
- DIGITAL SOCIAL TIES

CERLIS’ strong integration within the Université Paris Cité and the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle contributes to its vitality and to the dissemination of its research. It also benefits from the contributions of Master’s students and the many PhD candidates supervised by its members.
